What About Love Lands from MONKyMAN: Electronic Pop’s Next Berlin Export Drops Now

Out this past Friday, What About Love marks MONKyMAN‘s first proper album release through Laut & Luise. Mixing beats on Fruity Loops around age 14, he’s turned that early tinkering into a catalog that’s hit 3.2 million Spotify plays in two years flat, all while hauling his gear to gigs spanning South Africa, New York, Thailand, Tunisia, Egypt, Jordan, Norway, Denmark, and Paris. Festival runs have seen him slot in at Apple Tree Garden Festival near Biig Piig and Bombay Bicycle Club, then command the Fusion Festival bill with ARTBAT, Monolink, and K.I.Z.—stages where his blend of live charisma and understated techniques on the decks shine under lights of the big festival stages.

Spanning a full arc, the LP layers in breathy vocal runs over warm ambient swells, nimble jazz riffs, and beats infused with subtle African phrasing that keeps things propulsive yet open. The highlight, ‘Hambelela‘, which premiered on Electronic Groove and pulls in Vaudeni‘s standout vocal delivery, rides a simple, live percussion base that frames her resonant Oshiwambo lines—a direct line to his Namibia past that adds weight without flash, easing into the set’s broader themes of pull and push.

MONKyMAN had this to say: “When making this album I realized that I am just one link in a chain of creations that led to this record being birthed. So many inventions, jobs, tools, processes happen before I can even play a note on a synth. I am so grateful for all the inspiration and equipment available to me in order to make my music. My music has been created by all of us and will forever be there for all of us.“
