Tyla made her 2026 Grammys night a double milestone, winning her second consecutive Best African Music Performance trophy for ‘Push 2 Start’ and revealing backstage that her sophomore album, A-POP, arrives this summer. The 24-year-old South African singer, whose breakthrough ‘Water’ won the same category in 2024, missed the Premiere ceremony at the Peacock Theatre because red-carpet demands ran long. Still, ‘Push 2 Start’, a sleek amapiano-driven cut with over 440 million Spotify streams and huge YouTube numbers, easily beat Burna Boy’s ‘Love’, Davido and Omah Lay’s ‘With You’, Eddy Kenzo and Mehran Matin’s ‘Hope & Love’, and Ayra Starr and Wizkid’s ‘Gimme Dat’.
Tyla’s sound, pop and R&B threaded through amapiano’s log drum bounce and often called “popiano”, has already drawn Rihanna and Ariana Grande comparisons. She’s embraced the “African popstar” label. A-POP, she says, captures where she is now: older, sharper, with new stories to tell. Attentive listeners noticed the title flashing across the screen in her ‘Chanel’ video at 52 seconds and in other spots months before the official reveal.
She also confirmed a tour will follow the release and promised fresh singles soon. On the carpet, Tyla wore a reworked Dsquared2 Fall/Winter 2013 dress styled by Ronnie Hart. Feathers spilled into a long train. Gold accents caught the light along a deep neckline.
Tyla shared: “I just want to announce something. I want to announce that my sophomore album drops this summer and it’s called ‘A-POP’.” She added, “It’s going to be very different. It’s a new Tyla – not really a new Tyla, just me now. I just grew up. I was 21, 22, now I’m 24. I feel like a woman. I have other things to say. I have other vibes that I want to give… I’m so excited. It’s going to be crazy.”
