Jhené Aiko Announces September 11 Drop for ‘Westside Whimsy’

Jhené Aiko is set to release her fourth studio album, Westside Whimsy, on September 11 via Def Jam Recordings. The Los Angeles artist last delivered a full-length project with 2020’s Chilombo, which debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200, led the Top R&B Albums chart, and earned three Grammy nominations including Album of the Year. Aiko, now a seven-time Grammy nominee, first broke through with the 2013 EP Sail Out and 2014’s Souled Out, followed by the collaborative Twenty88 project with Big Sean and the expansive 22-track Trip in 2017.

The November 2025 single ‘Break’ offers an early glimpse into the album’s sonic palette. Anchored by minimal production, the track traces the emotional residue of a relationship that blurs the line between memory and reality, with Aiko’s refrain echoing over a skeletal beat and a nod to riding shotgun on PCH. She has described the album as drawing inspiration from 1990s records, West Coast car culture, surfing, and the languid rhythm of California beach life, themes she also touched on during an April wellness retreat in Healdsburg.

In the six years since Chilombo, Aiko remained active without releasing a new studio album. She released the 2024 compilation The Magic Hour Collection, secured another Grammy nomination for ‘guidance’, launched the Magic Hour Tour, and shared standalone tracks while expanding her ALLEL jewelry line and introducing an Erewhon smoothie named after the new album. Westside Whimsy marks her first focused body of work in this period, returning to the album format that has allowed her to weave personal reflection into understated, expansive R&B.
