Countdown to December 4th: Artist Spotlight – Nasty C

Nasty C joins the AFROTRAX lineup at The Ostrich Farm in Cape Town on 4 December 2026, anchoring a French Montana-led bill presented by PLAYY. The booking follows a prolific independent run: Free, released September 12th 2025 via Tall Racks, and T’s & C’s Apply, a 17-track collaboration with Tellaman that landed on September 1st 2026 through Tall Racks and Select Play. Both records are rooted in hip-hop, drawing in R&B textures and West African rhythms. Free shifts between forceful rap tracks and mid-tempo guitar-driven cuts, while the Tellaman project leans into Afrobeats and melodic hooks, as heard on ‘Come Over 2.0’ featuring Oxlade. Visually, he continues under the Ivyson banner: ivy tattoos, Zulu shield motifs, and sharp tailoring, a look anchored to his late mother’s name rather than a passing trend.

Nsikayesizwe David Junior Ngcobo was born on 11 February 1997 in Diepkloof, Soweto, and raised in Illovo, south of Durban, after losing his mother, Veliswa Ivy Ngcobo, in a car accident when he was 11 months old. His father, David Maviyo Ngcobo, raised him alongside his older brother Siyabonga, who introduced him to beat-making at age nine. Watching American hip-hop videos on the school bus, drew him to rap, with Lil Wayne and T.I. as early influences. A family friend, Whisper, dubbed him “Nasty Cat” for his word-perfect recitations, swearing included; he later shortened it to Nasty C. His debut, One Kid, a Thousand Coffins, arrived in 2012. The 2015 mixtape Price City and the single ‘Juice Back’, later remixed with Davido and Cassper Nyovest, marked his first records to break out beyond Durban.

His discography unfolds in distinct phases. Bad Hair (2016) established him nationally and achieved platinum status. Strings and Bling (2018) reached No. 1 and later went triple platinum, with ‘SMA’, ‘King’, and ‘Jungle’ dominating radio. Zulu Man With Some Power (2020) marked his Def Jam Africa era. I Love It Here (2023) reflected a shift toward fatherhood. Free was his first full-length release outside the major-label system. He now writes, produces, and records independently. Themes of independence, loss, Zulu heritage, and the realities of managing a catalogue recur throughout. Collaborators include Tellaman, MashBeatz, Cxdy, Blxckie, Usimamane, Rowlene, T.I., Ari Lennox, and French Montana.
