Countdown to Afrotrax: Artist Spotlight – Teddy Tumi

Teddy Tumi joins the AFROTRAX lineup at The Canvas in Johannesburg on 5 December 2026, bringing his genre-spanning approach to DJing to a festival headlined by French Montana. Born Tumi Blake Sithebe, the Johannesburg-based DJ, content curator and music producer has built his sound around the seamless blending of hip-hop, R&B, house and funk, drawing on a wide range of musical influences to create sets that move between contemporary hits and dancefloor favourites. His selections also incorporate Amapiano, Afro-house and Afrobeats, reflecting an open-format approach that allows him to move between different sounds without being confined to a single genre. Through his live performances and curated mixes, Teddy Tumi has developed a musical identity rooted in versatility, with a growing presence across South Africa’s nightlife and entertainment scenes.

Since beginning his DJ career, Teddy Tumi has expanded his presence through performances at festivals and events including Rocking the Daisies, The Ivyson Tour, Soundset Sunday and Kulture Fest. His work has also reached national radio audiences through appearances on METRO FM and 5FM, including his Hip Hop Nights mix for the latter. These platforms have allowed him to showcase his approach to music selection beyond the club environment, bringing together hip-hop, R&B and electronic influences for different audiences. His television appearance on Big Brother Mzansi has further extended his visibility, while performances in destinations including Amsterdam, Mozambique, Namibia and Zambia have taken his sound beyond South Africa. Across these appearances, his ability to navigate different genres remains central to his identity as a DJ.

That versatility is also reflected in his recorded work, particularly through The Teddy Tapes, a mix series that explores different sides of his musical taste. Across its editions, the series moves between hip-hop, R&B, house and Afro-house, giving listeners an opportunity to to experience his selections outside a live setting. Other projects, including Teddy’s Transitions, further reflect his interest in connecting different sounds through thoughtful track selection and mixing. His recorded work includes the 94.7 Bloc Party guest mix with Chrizz Beatz, as well as his Hip Hop Nights mix for 5FM. Alongside his DJ sets, Teddy Tumi has also released music, including the single ‘Umnyango’, demonstrating his involvement in music production as well as performance and curation.

AFROTRAX brings Teddy Tumi to The Canvas in Johannesburg on 5 December, where he joins French Montana, B.o.B and a lineup celebrating South African and international hip-hop. Known for moving between hip-hop, R&B and African dance music, his open-format style brings a different dimension to the event’s musical offering. For an artist whose work draws from multiple genres and musical eras, the Johannesburg show provides an opportunity to bring that versatility to the AFROTRAX stage. From the carefully curated selections of The Teddy Tapes to his performances across radio, festivals and international venues, Teddy Tumi continues to build his presence through a sound that moves freely between musical worlds.
