Q + A with Skindred: Rebel Music, Raw Energy, and the Power of Sound
In this exclusive interview, we sit down with Benji Webbe, the dynamic frontman of Skindred, a band renowned for fusing reggae, punk, metal, and electronic influences into their signature “ragga metal” sound. Known for their high-energy performances and socially conscious lyrics, Skindred has built a dedicated global following over their decades-long career. Benji shares his thoughts on the band’s journey, the evolution of rebel music, and how he stays inspired in an ever-changing industry. From his earliest musical influences to what fans can expect next, he gives us an inside look at the passion and drive that fuel Skindred’s powerful sound.
Looking back, what was your earliest entry into music appreciation? And music production?
I grew up in a very musical home. None of us played instruments but records were always being played, reggae music and American R&B and then there was the radio also playing lots of music. As a child it was all very inspiring to me.
What message do you hope listeners take away from your music?
From the many messages I receive through social media I get a lot of people being encouraged and empowered by the music Skindred makes. That’s the biggest blessing I get from playing music. It is to know that our music is helping people everyday through their ups and downs. For me that’s magic.
Outside of music, what inspires you?
Life itself is an inspiration. Everyday above ground is a day to give thanks and to draw energy from.
Is there a particular moment in the music industry that inspires you today as an artist?
Not really. If I’m honest I have been playing music professionally for over 30 years and I’m still as hungry and excited and love it just as much .
How do you stay motivated and inspired to continue creating, especially when facing adversity?
Love and passion. This is not my hobby in life. I write lyrics constantly and the way this world is today, I’m inspired by the battle that rages in heaven and on earth . You can’t be short of inspiration in this time
In your opinion how has your genre/s evolved over the years, and where do you think it could head in the future?
Rebel music is what I love and what I play and that’s not changed and I can’t ever see that changing. Whether it’s punk rock , dub step or reggae music it’s all the same to me. Music to set the captives free no matter what the genre and I don’t really see the difference in music if im honest. There’s only two kinds of music and that’s good and bad and you are the judge of that and so am I.
What can we expect from your future releases or creative projects?
Energy, passion, love and anger. These are the things that keep me going and always will. I’m constantly using anything musically to get the dance floor bouncing.
How do you strike the balance between maintaining your signature style while evolving your sound across different albums?
We don’t try to be honest. We get what we are given musically and execute as best as we can. What comes naturally.
As a band with a socially conscious edge, how do current global issues influence your songwriting, and what message do you hope to convey to fans through your music today?
I write about things that affect us all in our daily lives from A.I to abuse and try to leave nothing off the table. I write about everyone and things that touch my heart and that moves me. I write about race, sex, God, Jesus, the devil, heaven, hell and I’m inspired constantly by everything and anything.
