Interview with upbeat alternative hip-hop artist Mauvey

Releasing the double single ‘Sunday Afternoon / ‘I GET IT’ via independent Canadian record label 604 Records, Mauvey continues to defy the rules of genre conventions. His sound can vary from anything like alternative beats to hip-hop and the results are magical. The singer is known to draw musical influence from all the cities he has lived in. The constant dominating factor in Mauvey’s sound would definitely be his love for people and the world around him. What the world needs now is positive energy, and Mauvey’s music possesses this quality.

We chatted with the emerging music producer Mauvey below.

Looking back, what was your earliest entry into music appreciation? And music production?

The first single I ever bought was ’21 Seconds’ by ‘So Solid Crew’, it blew my mind. The first album I ever bought was Boy in the Corner by Dizzee Rascal, it was a life-changing body of work. I started writing and producing music in 2012 after deciding to switch careers from professional basketball.

How would you describe your sound?

My sound is Mauvey. It’s a bit purple, a bit pink, a bit red, a bit blue, a bit silver and a bit grey. It’s a bit pop, a bit indie alternative, a bit hip-hop, a bit R&B, a bit afro, a bit rock. The easy answer is alternative pop, but just like me, there’s more to my music than the easy answer in a genre box.

Do you have a motto or mantra that you live by?

I WILL NOT BE DENIED.

Outside of music, what inspires you?

Exceptional creative artists in fine art, fashion designers, innovative architecture, film directors and the stunning way they weave all the above including music into their stunning pieces.

Is there a particular historical moment in the music industry, that inspires you today as an artist?

Everything Michael Jackson did musically.

Tell us one interesting fact about yourself that no-one would expect.

I’m obsessed with Butterkist Toffee Popcorn. Like, obsessed. It’s a problem.

Five words to leave with your fans?

DON’T YOU DARE STOP DREAMING.
