Multi-instrumentalist Hanna brings joy to fans with upcoming EP
Multi-instrumentalist Hanna – aka Warren Harris – releases Champion EP on vinyl label Penelope: three tracks of gloriously singular and disorientating house music that perfectly demonstrate his kaleidoscopic approach to production.
Over the last few years, Hanna has created quite a reputation for himself via his jazz influenced melodies and hard punching broken house rhythms. His impressive discography spans multiple decades and includes essential and classic releases on diverse labels as Theo Parrish’s Sound Signature, Floating Points’ Melodies International, Funkineven’s Apron, Deep Departures and Track Mode.
Aside from his solo work, his collaborations with other prolific artists such as Theo Parrish under the Rotating Assembly moniker, and Key of Soul projects have been equally praised for their versatility and artistry.
His latest three track Champion EP lands on vinyl & digital label Penelope this September, and is another masterclass in idiosyncratic house music production.
Title track champion trips along on a faltering 4/4 groove, with soaring vocals, hip-hop samples and dusty pads chopped, scratched and layered in line with Hanna’s singularly kaleidoscopic musical vision.
Still builds itself around a similarly hesitant drum pattern, with warm Rhodsey chords and gently shimmering synths combining for a heady, disorientating house cut. Arguably saving the best to last, Until is a deep, vital and stripped down to its bare essentials, with the raw bassline matched perfectly with a meandering synth line and sublime vocal flourishes.
